The Blessed "Happy" Man pt 4

Justin Baker • February 4, 2023

My prayer is that this study through the book of Psalms has been a help to you so far. This has been an exciting study for me as we walk through the pages of Scripture. Let's continue our study in Psalm 1 beginning in verse 2

Let's notice what verse 2 states

[2] But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

The word 'but' is a conjunction it joins verses one and two together. Verse one states what the blessed man won't do but verse two states what the blessed man will do. The blessed man will not 1)walk in the counsel of the ungodly. 2) stand in the way of sinners. 3)sit in the seat of the scornful. Right after this is where you find the word 'but'. He will not do verse one but he will do verse 2.

The first word is but, which is joining verse one and verse two together but the next word is his. Who is the word 'his' speaking about? It is speaking of the blessed man from verse one. What about 'his'?

Notice the next word 'delight'!!!

This word, delight, has a thought of pleasure, desire, or a valuable thing. Verse one mentions all the delighting of the ungodly. The ungodly delight in giving ungodly counsel, they delight in standing in others way of getting right with God, and they love to sit in the seat of the scornful.

What you delight in tells what kind of person you are. If you delight in ungodly things it is probably because you are an ungodly person.

A blessed 'happy' man will delight in the law of the Lord.

What is the law of the Lord? In the old testament the law was the first five books of the Bible. It also is referred to as statutes, judgments, and precepts which is found in chapter 119 which we will study later.

The physical application to this is that we, as a blessed people, should delight in the law of the Lord. The law of the Lord for us would be the Word of God.

How much do you delight in the Word of God?

Do you delight in the Word of God so much that you will live by the Word of God? If you delight in the law of the Lord you will change some things in your life to mold it around the valuable thing, which in this case is the Word of God.

So many people claim to value the Bible with high value but watching the way they live they put a low value on it.

Many do not see the Bible as a valuable book. They see it as a fairy tale or as any other book. My friends, it's not just another book or another man-made story it is an alive book and it is more up-to-date than tomorrow's newspaper The value of the Bible has gone down in America. The Bible has been put on the shelf, like many other books, collecting dust. If you would see the Bible for what it really is you would make changes in your life to line up with the Bible. The Bible doesn't need to line up with your life, your life needs to line up with the Bible!!!!

Notice, if you will, several things about the Word of God.

It's pure Psalm 12:6-7, Proverbs 30:5

It's inspired by God 2 Timothy 3:16

It's forever settled, preserved Psalm 12:7; Psalm 119:89

It's truth John 17:17

It's a two-edged sword Hebrews 4:12

It's alive and powerful Hebrews 4:12

Notice the next line in the verse:...and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

The word meditate simply means to study, to ponder, to speak, to talk, or to utter.

The blessed 'happy' man will not only delight in the law of the Lord but he will make the law of the Lord his meditation day and night. This blessed person will make the law of the Lord his life. When you see them at the grocery store you will find them thinking about the scriptures that they have read that morning and pondering the thought of what they have read.

Do you know why we have so many unhappy people today in this world? Simply because they are not thinking about the Word of God all the time You may ask "Brother Justin, should I meditate on the Scriptures all the time?" A blessed, happy person will.

Notice Phillipians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Be a happy camper today and dwell on the scriptures.

Psalm 1:1-6 KJV

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. [2] But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. [3] And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. [4] The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. [5] Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. [6] For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
