Some Things Are Just Our Fault Pt. 3
David has sinned against God, and this is one of the punishments he would have to go through. You can choose your sin, but you can't choose your consequence. David is having a hard time with the punishment that he has to face and that is how this Psalm is written.
David, a man after God's own heart, is dealing with the punishment of his sin with Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11. We know from 2 Samuel 12 that Nathan the Prophet tells David that evil would rise against him out of his own house.
In the First verse David is strongly implying how people have turned on him and how others have joined them, but in verse two David is saying that some are saying he can't even get help from God.
As we saw yesterday and even the day before that Absalom rebelling and doing anything he could to take over the throne was not by chance. No, God told David in 2 Samuel 12:11 that this would happen.
I believe we try to make it look like we are the good ones when we do not want to bear the punishment for our own sin. What I mean is that David is trying to put the focus on everything else while God is dealing with his own sin. You say, " But he asked for forgiveness." Yes, he did but that does not change the fact that you can't take away the punishment.
The blame game happens often in our culture. We like putting the blame on others to distract from our sin and what we are going through. Little Billy put a swarm of hornets in his mom's car blaming Michael in hopes he will not get punished but Michael would.
David knew he would pay for his sin but how long and how much? He knew that four generations were going to be affected by this but not how much further it would go. I am reminded that sin will take you further than you want to go, and David understood that.
Let me remind us this morning that whether you may see your sin as a little sin, or a big sin, or you think you can do it secretly or openly it doesn't matter because all sin must be paid for and you will have to deal with the punishment of the sin. But you and I must remember that if we do the crime we must deal with the punishment.
The sin that David committed gave great occasion for the enemies of God to blaspheme. How do we know this? The Bible stated in 2 Samuel 12:14. Notice the verse:
Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.
Yes, David sinned against God. Yes, he wanted God to see how others were treating him. Yes, he needed to see that God was using others to judge him for his sin. But he also had to see that it will lead others down the wrong path by the sin he committed.
Have you ever considered how many people will not get saved due to you going against the God of Heaven?
Many stated even God can't help him, he is hopeless and helpless. I will say when you leave God out of the equation of your life don't expect others to see God helping you.
David's sin was not something that God was pleased, neither was David but the end result led to others saying there is no help for him in God.
There is a word at the end of verse 2 called Selah. This word means to think about this. In what way should we think on this?
1.) Our sin cost
Not only us but others
2.) We cannot blame others when God chooses them to punish us.
3.) We must take our punishment and learn from it
Application for our life: Do not blame others while God is using them to punish you for your sin. They are just an instrument in the hand of God to get your attention. David had to see this in his life, and I believe this is something we must consider in our own lives.
Also, please do not give occasion to the enemy to blaspheme the Lord by the way you live.
Question: what are some things you see that you need to ask the Savior to help you with?
Psalm 3:1-8 KJV
Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. [2] Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. [3] But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. [4] I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. [5] I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. [6] I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. [7] Arise, O Lord ; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. [8] Salvation belongeth unto the Lord : thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.
