You Must Mention Who God Is, And Let Him Confirm It! Pt. 2
David's sin put him in the position he was in, yet he relied on the Lord. In today's Fire-starter we will look into verse seven in a little more detail.
Notice the text verse: Psalm 3:7 KJV Arise, O Lord ; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.
We learned yesterday the word arise meant to accomplish, or confirm something. Today we will recognize what David wanted God to confirm.
Notice the phrase: ...save me, O my God: ....
Notice what David stated: 2 Samuel 22:3 KJV The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
David mentioned that the Lord was his Savior. We saw in yesterday's study David said, "Arise, O Lord;...." David wanted the Lord to accomplish or confirm what he stated about the Lord in verse three. In times past I'm sure David mentioned how the Lord had saved him from many things and now David wanted the Lord to confirm what he stated about Him.
When the things of this life come up against us, if we have relied on the Lord to help us, we can say, "Arise, O Lord ; save me, O my God:" and we can rest assured that He will do what He said He would do.
Notice the next phrase: ..... for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; .....
David references the time past where Saul came up against him and the Lord took care of Saul. David is wanting the Lord to do the same to his enemies now. David realized if God could do it back then, He could do it again in this situation. The Bible states in Hebrews 13:8 that Jesus is the same, and if He is the same, I believe I can trust Him to save me.
The God that: took care of Joseph and placed him in the kingdom; helped David conquer the battle against Goliath; walked with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed–nego in the flame; healed the lame, sick, and blind is more than capable of helping me in the situations that I face.
David needed saving out of his troubles because there was no way he could save himself. Let me remind us of this morning that is how salvation works. We cannot save ourselves, in fact, we cannot do anything without the Lord. John 15:5 states: .... for without me ye can do nothing. Salvation comes only through Jesus Christ not by our works or by any other means. No money, no baptism, no praying you into Heaven and out of Hell, no paying the priest, just Jesus!
David had no one to rely on to help him out of the situation until he cried out for help to the God of Heaven. No one on earth can help you out of your troubles, but the God of Heaven who knows all and sees all can.
Application: There is no help like the help from our God. May we rely on Him for help and not others. Just like David, we have no one to run to but the Savior. May we run to Him!
A Call to Action: When we find ourselves in situations that we cannot face by ourselves may we look to the Giver of help and strength, and that is Jesus Christ. Remind the Lord that as He has done things in times past, He can help today because Jesus Christ does not change!
Our Hymn for today is standing on the promises!
1 Standing on the promises of Christ, my King,
Through eternal ages let his praises ring;
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.
Refrain:
Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God, my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I'm standing on the promises of God.
2 Standing on the promises that cannot fail.
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
3 Standing on the promises of Christ, the Lord,
Bound to him eternally by love's strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit's sword,
Standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
4 Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
List'ning ev'ry moment to the Spirit's call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
Psalm 3:1-8 KJV
Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. [2] Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. [3] But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. [4] I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah [5] I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. [6] I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. [7] Arise, O Lord ; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. [8] Salvation belongeth unto the Lord : thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.
