The Old Testament Passage Pointing To Our Savior

Justin Baker • February 9, 2023

Psalm one was about the blessed and ungodly man and it is amazing how chapter two follows up with the Savior. Psalm one is man's condition chapter two the Christ.

It is amazing as you read through some of the Psalms how they are messianic. What does Messianic mean? Messianic means prophecy so this is considered a prophetic Psalm. Later in our study of Psalms we will come to chapter twenty two where we will read another Messianic Psalm.

Psalm two starts with a very angry nation and people. Let's be reminded that there are those that are not for our Savior. The more and more they get angry the further and further back they get away from our blessed Savior. The nations that rise up against God will one day bow down to Him, Philippians 2:5-11 states this very fact. Places such as China, Russia, and other communist countries that do not want anything to do with Christ will one day bow down to the Christ they rejected.

Look if you will at the first verse: Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

Imagine if you will the time of Christ and what was going on. For four hundred years the prophets were silent and God had not spoken to anyone, as we know, to prophesy, the country is in turmoil, taxing was happening and they were waiting on the Messiah. The Messiah would not be born in a King's palace but a feeding trough, He would not grow up rich, but would be a carpenter. This whole time they are looking for the Messiah to come rescue them from their troubles and trials and take the burden off them. Friend, that will come later but his main responsibility was to come die on the cross so He could save them.

Since the Messiah didn't come to do what they wanted Him to do, they are in a rage and the people are imagining vain things. The Word "vain" has a thought of a worthless thing, empty, to no purpose.

My friends, Jesus came at the right time. Have you thought about how during the troubles and trials that Israel was going through was when Jesus was born? Seems to me they would be excited that the Messiah was born. But we know Herod was not excited and was so angry about the whole situation he told the wise men to send him word where the Christ child was, saying he wanted to come and worship Him as well. We know that was not the case and we find that the wise men went another way.

Why do the Heathen rage? I believe it is because they do not view Christ as the Messiah, to them He was not who He claimed to be. Why do people imagine vain things? Because they probably had heard of many Messiah's of that day.

It's amazing how this was going on back then and it still goes on today. People claiming to be the Christ, or are false prophets, which I am not going to call names, but they are doing things and the people think they are the world's greatest person.

Far too long we have seen this happening, and far too often do we hear of people not believing in Christ because of the way people live in this day and time. If you hear of someone claiming they are the Christ you better mark that person and stay away from following them. Not only that but there are those that are claiming to be Christians while promoting worldly pleasures and lust, I am sorry but that is not a Christian.

Today you see people mad at God and upset and also imagining vain things because of the people that are putting junk in the minds of the young people and even adults, may God help us!!!

Psalm 2:1-12 KJV

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? [2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, [3] Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. [4] He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. [5] Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. [6] Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. [7] I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. [8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. [10] Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. [11] Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. [12] Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
