The Great Old Testament Passage Pointing To Jesus Pt.11
What a great Messianic Psalm this has been. So far we have studied verses 1-10 and now it is time to study verse 11. Let's ask God to prepare our hearts for the message He has for us today.
Notice verse 11: Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
Note the very first word and that is serve. Isn't it interesting that the God of Heaven calls for the ones that have been served need to serve? Kings have been known to give orders, now it is time for orders to be given to them. The Bible states to whom they are serving and that is the Lord Jesus Christ and how they will serve with fear.
Three times is the phrase serve the Lord with.. Notice them with me:
a.) Serve the Lord with all your Heart
1 Samuel 12:20 KJV
And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart;
b.) Serve the Lord with Fear
Psalm 2:11 KJV
Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
c.) Serve the Lord with Gladness
Psalm 100:2 KJV
Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
It is interesting to note that in the strongs concordance the word serve has many different meanings but there is one that I thought was interesting and that is worshipper. In other words worship the Lord with all your heart, with fear and gladness. No wonder in Psalm 100:2 states: ...come before his presence with singing.
Notice the next phrase of this verse: ...and rejoice with trembling.
Not only will they need to serve the Lord with fear but the Bible states: and rejoice with trembling. This has the thought of being happy but also tremble at the fact that you are serving the KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Happy, on one hand, knowing that you are serving the King of Glory but then trembling at the fact that He is the King of Glory.
We should have the same resolve this morning. How so?
1. We should serve the Lord with Fear
Once again as I stated in a prior devotional that proverbs 9:10 speaks that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
2. We should rejoice that we get to serve the Lord
That's why Psalm 100:2 says serve the Lord with gladness
3. We should serve with trembling
We should be happy that we get to serve the Lord but at the same time we must serve Him with trembling.
This is a scared fear and a reverent fear. We tremble at the fact that we will stand before Him one day but we can rejoice at the fact that we shall see Him.
Psalm 2:1-12 KJV
Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? [2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, [3] Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. [4] He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. [5] Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. [6] Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. [7] I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. [8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. [10] Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. [11] Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. [12] Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
