The Blessed "Happy" Man

Justin Baker • February 1, 2023

As we walk through this book of the Bible may the Lord encourage your heart and help you grow in Him. We may spend a few devotionals on each chapter since there is so much here.

Charles Spurgeon called this particular book of the Bible the Treasury of David. The wealth of understanding that had been put in this book of the Bible is amazing. Raymond Barber called this book of the Bible Heavens Hymnbook.

We know David had many struggles in Life from 1 Samuel 16 where he was the last one brought before Samuel because no one thought David, a shepherd boy, would be the next king. I am reminded of a song that has the words when others see a shepherd boy God sees a king. From obeying his father in the field of sheep to taking food to his brethren on the field of the battle. There we know how Eliab treats David, the obedient child, very bitterly. Don't ever look down on someone that is just obeying the father's command.

David is just obeying his dad's command and that was to take food to his brethren. You know I often wondered if Goliath had not come out and defied God and Israel if David would have dropped off the food and went home? I'm sure the story of 1 Samuel 17 would have been different. Eliab basically told David why are you here? Don't you need to get back to doing what you are good at? Leave the big stuff to the big boys and you go back to handling the little things.

From Eliab's standpoint David should go back home and leave everything to the big boys, if you will, but David said, is there not a cause? He fights Goliath, a nine foot; nine-inch giant and with the help of the Lord, he defeats him.

You may ask, why are you putting this in the devotional? Simply for the fact of Psalm 1. Would you read through these six verses?

Psalm 1:1-6 KJV

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. [2] But his delight is in the law of the Lord ; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. [3] And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. [4] The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. [5] Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. [6] For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Notice the first four words! Blessed is the man.... This is the start of the chapter. The context of this chapter is on the blessed man. The application to this chapter is how we can be blessed.

The Word Blessed in Strong's concordance means Happy. How can a man be happy, Blessed?

Let's notice several thoughts. We may not be able to cover everything in this devotional, but we will continue this for the next few days.

"If your happy and you know it clap your hands" is the song we used to sing as children, this is a song that we could apply today.

The very start of the chapter gives us several things about a blessed "happy" man. First thing is found in the very first line of verse 1. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly

I would say a happy man is someone who doesn't walk in the advice of the wicked man.

Blessed is the man that doesn't receive advice from the wicked on how to do Godly things. Amen!!!! The problem with our culture is we want the ungodly to influence the godly on how things ought to be done or run. I'm sorry but we must never receive advice from an ungodly man on how to run a godly work!!!!

An ungodly man will always tell you to do things in an ungodly way. Pastor's need to seek Godly counsel. Sunday school teachers need to seek Godly counsel. Missionaries need to seek godly counsel. Godly people need Godly counsel!!!!

The advice may sound good but look at the end result of where they are at. If you look at them, are they at peace? Do they even do what they say you ought to be doing? The ungodly man will always bring down the Godly man!!!!

Application to our life: Are you walking in the counsel of the ungodly? If you are you will not be a blessed "happy" person.

We find a great example of a man in Genesis 6 who is doing what God has commanded him. The question today is, are you doing what has been commanded of you?
