Some Things Are Just Our Fault

Justin Baker • February 23, 2023

Over the last couple of days, we have taken time to learn the background of this Psalm. We know David had many people that rose up against him, yet he stayed faithful in the things that were important.

I don't know about you, but I sometimes feel like David. It seems every step forward I take, I take two steps back. There are two ways to look at this Psalm 1.) verses one to two looking at man or 2.) verses three through eight looking at God. David started by looking at man, but I am glad he finished by looking at the Savior.

Notice the first verse:

Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.

David, like most of us, focuses on the things that are happening at the moment. For example we make assumptions when we are in the moment, sometimes we can mess things up by not doing it God's way. Please understand the all-knowing God knew all when it came to Absalom and David.

Remember David's sin with Bathsheba? This is a result of that sin. Notice the verses below when Nathan went to confront David about his sin with Bathsheba:

2 Samuel 12:10-14 KJV

Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. [11] Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. [12] For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun. [13] And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said unto David, The Lord also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. [14] Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

Notice what God stated to David through the prophet Nathan: [11] Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

The punishment of David's sin is that evil would come up against him in his own house. Absalom was the son of David and Maacah, she was the daughter of Talmai King of Geshur. Geshur was one of the places that God told Joshua to conquer, but according to Joshua 13:13 the Geshurites were not expelled from the land. Notice the verse: Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

Sometimes the reason we go through things is because of our sin. Have you ever thought if 2 Samuel 11 wasn't in the Bible if Psalm 3 would not be here either. It wasn't until after David committed sin with Bathsheba that Absalom tried to take over the throne, and sometimes we think that things just fall like they do but can I remind us the things that we go through are not all the time but I will say a good majority of the time because of our sin.

Absalom starts his overthrow in 2 Samuel 15 by stealing the hearts of the people. Be careful of those that state "if I were" this or that, their intentions are almost always never good.

Not only did Absalom steal the hearts of the people but also turned some friends against his own father.

Let me state this morning your sin doesn't just affect you, it affects others around you and it may cost you friendships in the end.

During the time of the rebellion of Absalom I wonder if the words of Nathan the prophet rang in the ears of David? I wonder if David maybe said to himself, "I wish I had not of sinned against God."

Maybe you are discouraged about what happened in the past, or what you had to go through. Friend let me remind you that you can't change the past, but you can put your trust in the one that is already in the future and that is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 3:1-8 KJV

Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. [2] Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. [3] But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. [4] I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. [5] I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. [6] I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. [7] Arise, O Lord ; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. [8] Salvation belongeth unto the Lord : thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.
