Some Battles Need No Weapon.
David's life has been filled with ups and downs facing many challenges and trials. Some of the things he went through were just a learning experience for David others were a direct result from his sin. Read today's fire-starter to be encouraged.
Notice our text verse:
Psalm 3:6 KJV
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.
One thing David knew was he did not have to worry about things because he had the Almighty God protecting him. I think many times we rely on our weapons and other sources more than we rely on God. David had soldiers that could help him, he knew how to use a sling and a stone, he also knew how to use a sword and shield, but his source of protection was from almighty God.
I heard about a preacher that was preaching in a meeting, and while he was preaching someone came up to him and put a gun to his side and said, "If you say another word, I will pull the trigger." The preacher then replied, "You can't threaten me with Heaven!"
David experienced a multitude of people coming up against him, but his protection was from God alone. When people rise up against you, fall on your face to the God that is above you. Many times we find ourselves in the situation that we think we ought to fight or we ought to be the one to take care of it, but I am glad I can run to the One that is in control.
The greatest temptation is to fight back, to correct someone when they are doing wrong against you, but that will not help anything. The best thing for you to do is go to the throne room of grace about the situation.
Several years ago there was a man that had decided he was going to go around the church and spread lies about me. The man weekly would go to my mom and tell her all the things he saw that I was and how he thought I shouldn't be doing certain things because I was young and didn't know what I was doing. I will never forget one night after service had been completed this man had my mom cornered again telling his lies and the assistant pastor at the time with them. The thought came to my mind that I needed to defend myself and tell him where he was wrong, but I never forgot the words of knowledge a man, that is with the Lord now, said: "Justin, people here at the church know you very well, you do not need to defend yourself." I never forgot that and the man that did that is no longer at the church. What I am saying this morning is that some things do not need a weapon to fight the battle when you have the Lord and your integrity and character.
May I remind us this morning that God will handle those that come up against us if we will just trust him. Man will fail you, but the God of Heaven never fails.
David experienced those that were his "friends" that became his darkest enemies, but his trust was in the Lord.
Notice Psalm 56:1-4, 9-11:
Psalm 56:1-4,9-11 KJV
Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. [2] Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. [3] What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. [4] In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. [9] When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. [10] In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word. [11] In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
Notice what is says in Psalm 118:8-9:
Psalm 118:8-9 KJV
It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. [9] It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.
Notice Proverbs 3:5-6
Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Some battles do not need weapons to win, because we have the God that can change man's heart. If you do not believe me, think about the time that God hardened and softened Pharaoh's heart. Think about how God used Nebuchadnezzar.
God has power to protect, humble, and exalt you. If He can do it to you God can do it to others.
Application to today's fire-starter: When it seems many have turned against you realize that if your trust is in the Lord you shouldn't fear what man or flesh can do to you.
A Call to Action: When others come up against you, bring them up before the Father.
Notice the Hymn Under His Wings:
1 Under His wings I am safely abiding;
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him--I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me and I am His child.
Refrain:
Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.
2 Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed. (Refrain)
3 Under His wings, O what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me,
Resting in Jesus I’m safe evermore. (Refrain)
Psalm 3:1-8 KJV
Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. [2] Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. [3] But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. [4] I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. [5] I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. [6] I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. [7] Arise, O Lord ; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. [8] Salvation belongeth unto the Lord : thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.
