When God Shuts The Door

Justin Baker • May 5, 2025

When God shuts the door, no man can open it, When God opens the door, no man can close it.

Genesis 7:16 KJV
And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.

As we learned from last week, Noah has obeyed the voice of God. Even in our text, Noah is obeying the voice of God.

Notice something that i think we need to be reminded of, and that is the Lord closed the door on Noah.

There was absolutely no way that Noah could open this door simply because he was not the one who closed it.

I think so many times we like to open the door when God keeps it closed and we like to close doors that God keeps open.

There are doors that are shut by God for a reason, and we must trust him. God, also, opens doors for reasons, and we must trust him with those reasons as well.

Notice a few things about why the Lord shut them in.

1. The Lord shut them in to show that salvation comes only by him.

If you noticed our text verse, it states that the Lord shut him in.

The only way of salvation is by the door. Jesus said it this way in the book of John .

John 10:7,9 KJV
Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. [9] I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Jesus also stated in John 14:6
John 14:6 KJV
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The Lord is the only way of salvation for anyone. I believe God made a way of salvation for all men. 2 Peter 3:9 tells us that.

2. The Lord shut them in to prove that he keeps those that are saved.

Once they made it into the ark, they found safety during the storm.

I am thankful for eternal security. There was absolutely no way for me to save myself, nor was there any way that I could keep myself saved. Therefore, he did all the work, and I trusted him.

I am thankful I can never lose my salvation. Friend, this does not give you a right to sin, although some claim it to, but rather this is to show that there is nothing you can do that will take you out of salvation.

Notice these verses from John 10

John 10:27-30 KJV
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: [28] And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. [29] My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. [30] I and my Father are one.

3. God opened the door after they made it through the storm.

We will notice this more in-depth in a later study, but I must mention it now. After the waters were abated, they were able to go out of the ark.

They passed through the land till the land was ready for them, and they were to get off the ark on to the land that is now prepared for the to multiply.

Who opened the door? The God of Heaven opened the door, and they were able to come out of the ark.

It was in the Saviors' time they got off the ark. Just like when the Savior has his time for you and I to cross over the chilling waters of death and make it to Heaven.

What a day that is going to be. Friend, we are not going till our time is finished here on earth, and may i say we must do all we can to work and finish our task till he calls us home.

Noah preached and warned others of the coming judgment, are you?
