What To Do When The Old Life Flares Up!

Justin Baker • July 14, 2025

Lot's look at the plain reminded him of the land of Egypt. Sadly, he chose the things that reminded him of the world and its system rather than what God could have given him.

Notice our text for today:
Genesis 13:10-13 KJV
And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. [11] Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. [12] Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. [13] But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

Notice the phrase in verse 10 ....like the land of Egypt. This land was well watered. It was good for his cattle, but sadly, it was not good for Lot and his servants.

The reminder of the old life sometimes flares up, and we must crucify it before it crucifies us.
Lot has traveled with Abraham and his family, and up to this point, there has not been a controversy or strife, but now there is, and the way that Abraham handles it is great. He tells Lot to pick where he would like to go. He allows Lot to make his choice.

Lot looks at his options and decides that the plain of Jordan was the best place for him to go.

We will notice this next week, but I do want to mention it. When you separate from the world unto God , you will get the blessing from God. You can not love God and the world at the same time because you can not serve two masters.
Notice what Matthew 6:24 KJV states:
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Also notice what Luke 16:13 KJV States:
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

It wasn't until Abraham and Lot separated, then God blessed Abraham.

The look at the plain reminded Lot of Egypt. You would have thought that he would have stayed away after the sins that were committed in Egypt, but instead, he was willing to go to a place that reminded him of the life of Egypt.

Many people are destroyed by temptation.

If you do not crucify the flesh, you will find the flesh crucifying you.

If Lot had only chosen something different than the plain of Jordan, we possibly would have seen a different outcome.

Some need to take some things out of their life so they can go on for God.

Warren Wiersbe said that our past should be rutters that help us through life, not anchors that hold us down. Isn't that true? Sadly, Lot didn't allow it to be a rutter but an anchor.

Have you anchored in the past to the point that everything you do reminds you of your old life?

It's time to consider what 2 Corinthians 5:17 says.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Your past ought not to be an anchor but a rutter.

Someone said this, when the Devil reminds you of your past, remind him of his future.

Do you have things that reminded you of your past? It's time to move away from those things and take away any opportunity for you to try to go back to the old life.

I will say there was no peace in the life of Lot and there will be no peace in your life if you live against the will of God.

We learned yesterday that we be brethren. One thing about brethren is that there will be strife, but we must realize we can do something somewhere else or in some other capacity. If you do your part and they do their part, we can get a lot done.
