We Be Brethren. Is Not The Whole Land Before Thee?
Strife amongst the brethren is one of the hardest things to deal with. There are some things that we must understand when there is strife among the brethren and what we should heed to.
Notice our text verses for today:
Genesis 13:5-9 KJV
And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. [6] And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. [7] And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. [8] And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. [9] Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
Abraham and his family and Lot and those who were with him have come back with Abraham from Egypt. They arrive.back at the altar, and from there there is strife and division among Abraham's and Lot's herdman.
One thing that I have noticed among God's people is they can really put a fuss over something that could be resolved so easily.
People get upset when someone takes a seat in their pew or they didn't get to be involved in certain areas in ministry, or no one has called to check on them. One thing we must remember is that 1. We be brethren, and 2. The whole land is before us.
Many get offended over the tiniest things, but they must realize there are other opportunities available.
Illustration:
I have been in a situation before where there was another church coming into our area to pick up some riders of ours. One day, we had had enough, and the bus director hopped off our bus and talked to them about "stealing" our bus riders. Of course, the church that came from their area didn't think too much about it and still came into that neighborhood and kept picking children up.
After a while of seeing them pick the children up one day, our bus captain said this, and it still rings in my ears today. We can't reach them all! We can reach another section for the glory of God. If there is strife in one place, go somewhere else and start doing something for God.
We will study this at a later time, but Isaac came to the land of the Philistines, and there the wells were stopped that Abraham his father had made. When he dug the well again, there was strife among the Philistines and Isaac. Did that keep Isaac from digging another well? Absolutely not! When opposition arose, strife, he went to another area.
There may be strife between you and an individual or between a church and a church. Let me remind you that the whole land is before us. Do what you can do for the glory of God and let them do what they can do for the glory of God and we not only take the focus off of us but we will give the glory to God.
