They Believed God, Why Can't You?
The People of Nineveh believed God and acted on their belief, and God, in turn, gave mercy to them.
Jonah 3:5 KJV
So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
Often, we find ourselves saying we believe God, yet we live like we don't.
I am reminded of this every time I hear a church say I believe in Hell, but they never give the gospel, or they say I believe God can heal cancer, yet they never ask God to work in the body; even though He is the great Physician.
It's easy to say we believe something, but then the hard part is actually putting our beliefs to practice.
Some of us need some motivation to get busy. I know some will say all I am reading in this devotional is I need to do better. Friend, there is always room for improvement, and if you feel that way, maybe this is for you.
The Ninevites, when they heard the message, believed God, that is something they had to do. They humbled themselves, they acted upon the message. In return, God gave them mercy and did not destroy the city because of them turning from their evil way.
Friend, there are things that God wants us to do in order for him to do his part.
1 John 1:9 is a perfect example. We must confess our sins in order to get forgiven of our sin.
How about James 4:8? Draw night to God, and he will draw nigh to you? Did he say that God is the one that takes the first move, then you take it? No! Rather, you must take the first step.
Life application: they believed God and acted upon what they believed. We must do the same thing. If we believe the rapture is close, then why are we not telling people about the Savior? If we believe God can hear our prayer, then why are we not praying? Maybe it's time to quit doubting and start believing!
