The Shield Of Abraham Can Be Your Shield To

What we learn from the Life of Abraham concerning his Shield.

Genesis 15:1 KJV

After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

Imagine for a moment a very hostile situation. There is a man inside the house with a gun ready to aim at officers, and they need to secure him and take the gun away.

One of the officers says, "Get the shield!" They run and grab the shield, and they are able to use it to get to the man that has threatened to shoot the police. Everyone is safe.

God had promised Abraham that he would make a nation out of him. (Genesis 12:2)

In Genesis 13, he is able to survey the land that God is going to give him. In Genesis 14, he saves Lot out of trouble

In Genesis 15, God reminds Abraham who he is. He is his shield and reward.

Abraham's descendants would become what we know as Israel, but God was his shield, so his descendants could be what they are today, the nation of Israel.

God told Abraham, " I am thy shield..."

God was saying I am your protection, defense, and covering.

We all experience the shield of our Savior when it comes to all areas of life. I have heard people say that if it wasn't for the Lord, they would have been dead already, but God protected them

Later on in the book of Deuteronomy, Moses said this in regards to Israel

Deuteronomy 33:29 KJV

Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places.

God was a shield to Israel, and he will protect them.

David mentioned that the Lord was his shield in Psalm 3

Psalm 3:3 KJV

But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

David realized that when everyone and everything around him was against him, he had the Lord to be a shield for him.

Psalm 28:7 KJV

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

Notice that the Word of God will be a shield to us.

Psalm 91:4 KJV

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

We must keep the Word of God in our hearts to shield us from sin. (Psalm 119:11)

We must take the shield of faith according to Ephesians 16

Ephesians 6:16 KJV

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Abraham had this shield because the Bible says without faith it is impossible to please him.

Where does faith come? It comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17

Hebrews 11:8-12 KJV

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. [9] By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: [10] For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. [11] Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. [12] Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

Faith brings obedience and blessings as we see from this passage of scripture.

When we hold to the promises of God, we find the God of the promises holding us.

Friend, take the shield of faith today to fight off the fiery darts of the wicked.

Abraham's shield was his God and he is Our shield as well.
