The LORD Led Me - Genesis 24:27
Can you say that God is leading you? Like a Shepherd leading His sheep, God wants to lead you! Psalm 23 says, “He leadeth me.”
I appreciate Pastor Clint Lewey giving our Fire-starter devotional. From time to time I may have guest writers write a thought for us to think on.
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren. (Genesis 24:27)
Can you say that God is leading you? Like a Shepherd leading His sheep, God wants to lead you! Psalm 23 says, “He leadeth me.”
Abraham’s servant had a monumental task; he was to find a wife for Abraham’s son, Isaac! Yet, this was no ordinary matchmaking game, and the stakes were much higher than a friend trying to set someone up on a blind date! This was a matter of finding the woman God would have Isaac to marry. Plus, the servant was absolutely, under no circumstances, to bring Isaac back to Abraham’s native country. No, Isaac’s place was in the land God had given to Abraham. This meant that his future wife must also embrace this Divine plan herself!
How would Abraham’s servant ever succeed in his task? There were difficulties and dangers to consider. What if he found the right woman, but she just was not interested? What if her family was not interested? What if….? What if….? How could he possibly handle such major decisions?
The servant did exactly what you and I must do. He depended upon the leading of the Lord.
Do we not also face decisions every day? Some of our choices can change the rest of our lives in one moment. Often, we must choose how to respond, what to say, or what not to say! There will be circumstances beyond our control, and there will be times when we wrestle with what we are supposed to do!
Like a tapestry, Genesis 24 is woven with this theme. The Lord wants to lead your life! Read Genesis 24:7, 24:12, 24:21, 24:27, 24:40, 24:48, 24:50, and 24:56. Abraham’s servant depended upon God leading him. We need His leading! The Lord sees what we do not see. He knows what we do not know. Life is not about finding our will; it is about knowing God’s will!
There is no difficulty in God’s desire or ability to lead you. The real question is, “Will I follow His leading?”
A word of caution, do not be as those who would try to make God some type of genie in a bottle. Some people say, “God led me,” to justify their own desires and selfish choices. No, being led of the Lord involves surrender, the Scriptures, and the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Here are a few principles as you follow the Lord’s leading in your life.
1. God Leads Through His Word
God will never lead you contrary to His own Word, and the Bible is the Word of God. Psalm 119:105 tells us that His Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. If you find a thing to be right according to Scripture, you are following God’s leading.
2. God Leads Through Other Christians
Just as God used Abraham to set the servant on this task, God can use other believers in your life. Find Christians who are mature in the faith and full of wisdom. Pharaoh himself recognized how God had filled Joseph with His Spirit and had given him wisdom.
3. God Leads Through Circumstances
Abraham’s servant considered how Rebekah, whom he had just met, was a hard worker and a woman of great hospitality. Without GPS or Facebook, he met the very woman who was not of the Canaanites but a distant relative of Abraham. God was working in the circumstances! Consider what is happening around you by prayer and the Word of God.
As the hymn writer said, “God leads His dear children along.” Submit yourself to God’s plan. Obey what you already know is right before the Lord, and trust that your Father will lead the way.
