Selling Out For The Temporal Genesis 25

Justin Baker • March 23, 2026

The well known two boys of Isaac can help us today.

We all know the story of Jacob and Esua from our Sunday school class.

We find that two nations would be born out of Rebekah, Edom and Israel. Edom comes from Esau and Israel, of course, comes from Jacob.

We know the story of the text how these two boys got older and there was favoritism going on in the home.

There should never be favoritism in any home.

Treat every child the same because this will always cause friction in the home.

According to verse 28 Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his venison.

Sadly, Esau was willing to trade his birthright for some pottage that would only fill his stomach for a few hours and then he would be hungry again.

You say, "okay, he was hungry and Jacob seen the opportunity to get the birthright."

Esau did not have to sell his birthright for food. It was an expensive way out for a simple momentary contentment.

Many have sold their birthright if you will for the vain things of this world. Many have sold their birthright for the office in politics, a greater work promotion, or even greater acceptance of family.

Some have laid aside their birthright to take a position that is ungodly just to have more money.

Friend, he sold his birthright for the temporal.

Take note what William Carey stated. "I'm not afraid of failure. I'm afraid at succeeding at things that do not last."

Only Heaven will reveal at the Judgment seat of Christ the things that we sold our birthright for worthless vain things that do not last.

One day everything we do will be tried by fire, 1 Cor. 3, and what we do for Christ will last but what we have done for self will not last.

Friend, the lesson is very simple, do not sell your eternal rewards for some temporal gain.

Think on these verses as you go throughout today. We must lay up treasures in Heaven and not here on earth. May we live for Jesus!

Matthew 6:19-21 KJV
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Can you say that God is leading you? Like a Shepherd leading His sheep, God wants to lead you! Psalm 23 says, “He leadeth me.”
