Great Men Are Not Always Wise

Justin Baker • January 18, 2023

Have you ever heard the phrase you have to grow old but you don't have to grow up? Consider this as we walk through our devotional this morning.

Several weeks ago me and my girlfriend found a little arcade where we could do laser tag and bumper cars, which I am not a fan of, and many other fun things to do. She made the comment on Facebook, when your boyfriend is a kid at heart.... and proceeded to talk about the arcade. I told her I am always going to be a big kid no matter what and she said, I hope you never quit being a big kid.

This story will help us understand our thought this morning. Just because someone grows up doesn't mean they have wisdom nor the understanding.

There are alot of adults I know that do not use wisdom. Of course some don't know the difference between wisdom and knowledge. Wisdom is putting to action the knowledge that you have. I believe we covered this a few days ago but it is a great reminder.

Notice with me our text verse

Job 32:9 KJV

Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.

Great men are known to speak what they want instead of using actions to what they know.

There are preachers that are great men but they can't be considered wise why? Because they have the book knowledge but they never put the book knowledge to use.

Great men have come out of secular and Bible college that were not wise men why? Simply because they had the knowledge but they never put wisdom with it.

As with our text there are some that have now grown old that still have not applied themselves to the knowledge that they have and done something about it.

There are older people that know how to do things but they are not wise because they never do the certain thing they know how to do.

Let me encourage you don't be a great man or woman be a wise man or woman even in older years. Because we need some older folks that are wise not just great and we need some younger ones that will be wise not just great and when they get Older to stay wise not just great.

Don't act like a kid, use wisdom and act older than your age not younger than your age!!!!

Job 32:1-22 KJV

So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. [2] Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God. [3] Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job. [4] Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he. [5] When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled. [6] And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion. [7] I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. [8] But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding [9] Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment. [10] Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion. [11] Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say. [12] Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words: [13] Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man. [14] Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches. [15] They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking. [16] When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;) [17] I said, I will answer also my part, I also will shew mine opinion. [18] For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me. [19] Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles. [20] I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer. [21] Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man. [22] For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.

We find a great example of a man in Genesis 6 who is doing what God has commanded him. The question today is, are you doing what has been commanded of you?
